Program Description This CME initiative features a panel discussion delving into the overall “illness burden” associated with mental illness. A highly regarded panel of experts in the area of psychiatry and mental illness will discuss the different domains of function and how to put them all together to provide better treatment for their patients. The discussion is initiated by giving an overview of the disease state, treatment options and recent publications and clinical trials such as CATIE. The introduction will be followed up by a discussion pertaining to the efficacy of current treatment options available. Cardiovascular and metabolic considerations pertaining to these treatments will be discussed at length. As well as cognition, which will be discussed and the recent data pertaining to atypical antipsychotic treatments will be reviewed. The program will be tied together by reviewing the overall illness burden and the effects it has on metabolics, as well as discussion of how all physicians share the burden of testing and monitoring their patients.
Target Audience This program is intended for Psychiatrists and other healthcare providers who care for patients with schizophrenia or other chronic mental illness.
Learning Objectives Upon completion of this educational activity participants will be able to:
Discuss real world effectiveness of antipsychotic drugs in patients with chronic schizophrenia
Review metabolic considerations when prescribing these drugs and monitoring patients on them
Discuss head-to-head data provided by published trials comparing and contrasting antipsychotic drugs
Understand outcomes data from clinical trials and how to apply this data in their clinical practice
